Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine Jacobson was born and lived within Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam is her mom. She was a former backup singer for Philadelphia International Records. As a child, her father was appointed to be City's Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. Her family later moved into this historical building. In 2005 she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts with a vocal music major. Sullivan was first singing in the kids' chorus as a contralto, later she joined the adult chorus a couple of years after that. Sullivan did not get exposed to the world of secular music for the first time. "I started singing as a soloist in the church, and someone asked me to commit to gospel records when I was eleven. But I wasn't ready to take that step," she says. "Then the time came that McDonald's held a contest for kids in major cities I was invited to perform 'Accept What God Wills' on Showtime in the Apollo and the audience was very enthusiastic". Stevie Wonder sang her part during his 13th birthday celebration. Sullivan was signed initially to Jive Records at the age fifteen. There, she recorded an entire album. But the album never came out. Sullivan was then removed out of the company. Missy Elliott was the producer for several tracks from the album she released as her first. Among them "Backstabbers" which is a buzz track recorded by Timbaland, was written by Elliott.
